Intent Statement for Oracy
At St Mary's Primary, our intent for Oracy is to cultivate an environment where pupils develop both confidence and competence in articulate speaking and listening. We believe that effective communication is fundamental to the personal and academic growth of every child. Our aim is to empower all pupils to achieve their full communicative potential by equipping them with the essential skills to:
- Express Themselves Clearly and Effectively: We strive to provide opportunities for pupils to articulate their thoughts, feelings, and ideas in a coherent manner, ensuring they can communicate across various contexts and audiences.
- Engage in Meaningful Discussions and Debates: Our curriculum encourages active participation in discussions, enabling pupils to contribute their perspectives while also valuing and building on the contributions of their peers in a respectful manner.
- Develop Critical Thinking Skills: Through structured oracy activities, pupils will enhance their ability to think critically, analyse information, and construct well-reasoned arguments, which are essential skills for lifelong learning.
- Cultivate Cultural Capital and Empathy: We recognise the importance of understanding diverse viewpoints and experiences. Our oracy initiatives will promote cultural awareness and empathy, allowing pupils to appreciate and respect the richness of different backgrounds and perspectives.
- Enhance Overall Wellbeing: By fostering a supportive environment for communication, we aim to boost pupils' confidence and self-esteem, contributing positively to their overall wellbeing and social interactions.
Through our commitment to Oracy, we aspire to create a school community where every pupil feels valued and empowered to communicate effectively, thereby laying a strong foundation for their future academic and personal success.
This intent statement aligns with our vision of nurturing unique individuals who can grow and flourish, as inspired by the parable of the mustard seed, and reflects our dedication to fostering a culture of respect, collaboration, and lifelong learning.
