Monday 11th May

Hello Class One,

I hope you had lots of fun celebrating VE Day on Friday?

We had another great week last week learning around the Hungry Caterpillar story! It has been really exciting to see videos and photos sent by Miss Stroud of the caterpillars building their chrysalis. I can’t wait to find out what happens next. What do you think will happen next?

We will have another Google Meet on Thursday 14th May at 10am. It would be lovely to see you all there for a chat. This time can you bring something along that you have created. You can show us and tell us all about it. It could be a lego construction, a painting, a story, some art and craft-whatever you like! We can’t wait to see what you have been creating!

This week we are learning around the story of The Very Busy Spider! Have a great time learning at home.

Remember to do what you can (2 hours is plenty- this doesn’t need to be all in one go!) and to learn lots more through your own play too.

Have a great week!

Begin by watching the animation of The Very Busy Spider

Here is the link https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=TfL0g-XRxnA. Make predictions and talk about the main events, characters and setting as you watch it together. Why can’t the spider stop to answer and play with the animals on the farm? Why did the Spider fall asleep in the end?

Literacy

Today can you all create your own song, rhyme or poem about a mini beast? You could write it down, sing it, create actions to go with it, use household items as instruments as you sing it, or change the words to your favourite nursery rhyme. There are some ideas below. You might like to video yourself performing your rhyme and send it to me on Class Dojo using your portfolio section on there.

Maths

All Nursery and Reception children can have a go at completing some of the day 1 and 2 Busy Spider themed maths challenges over the next two days.

Here is the link. Click on Summer term- Week 4 (w/c 11th May) and all of the activities for the week will be there. https://whiterosemaths.com/homelearning/early-years/

Other play based  maths activities for Nursery to work on throughout the week

  • Counting skills-  Draw, make or print off some minibeasts (up to 5, then 10 and extend the number further if your child is confident). Encourage your child to line them up and then touch count them accurately. Can you make a matching number label together?

  • Beginning to recognise numbers- Draw or print numbers on minibeasts (0-5,0-10 and extend further if confident), hide them in the garden and go on a number hunt! Can you recognise the numbers and can you order them together?

Other play based maths activities for Reception to work on throughout the week

  • Order numbers 0-20, then count and draw the matching amount of mini beasts for each number e.g draw 4 ladybirds, 10 spiders and 19 bees. It will be a minibeast number line!

  • Doubling-make a ladybird, place an amount of up to 10 spots on one side, double it and add the same to the other side, how many does it have in total? Double…. is….

  • Sharing- make 2 playdough spiders, use 2, then 4,6,8,10 orange segments, share them fairly between the two spiders. What if there were 5 pieces of orange to share? What if there were 3 or 4 spiders? How would you share a whole cake between 2 spiders? Can you draw a picture to show what you would do to share the cake?

  • Adding and subtracting using lots of practical resources and drawings where you can. Use number stories to help with adding and subtracting e.g One spider had 2 flies and the other had 4 flies, how many altogether? Make the spiders and flies to help set up and solve this. Look at recording as a number sentence together 2 + 4 =

A spider had 5 flies and then it ate 3, how many does it have now? Make or draw a spider, give it 5 flies, subtract the 3 (cross them out/take them). Look at recording as a number sentence together 5 - 3 =

  • 1 more and 1 less- Use a ladybird, count on some spots, what if the ladybird had 1 more? 1 less? 2 more? 2 less?
